SHOPPING IN OKOTOKS

From malls to chain stores, hardware to software, Canadian Tire to Walmart, Okotoks has the benefit of big brand shopping centres without the crowds and traffic of a big city. But the truly wonderful gem in the heart of Okotoks is the eclectic collection of boutiques and specialty shops to be discovered in the Olde Towne district, which guarantees a great day of browsing on a Saturday!

The area known as Olde Towne Okotoks includes sections of McRae Street, Elizabeth Street and Railway Street. Here you’ll find unique boutiques for clothing and footwear such as Ginger Laurier and Snowflakes & Blossoms, as well as many services for health, beauty and wellness.

You’ll also find a good selection of restaurants and cafés, and you might just be tempted to step into the olde fashioned Candy Shoppe where you can fulfill your craving for sweet treats and Chapman’s Ice Cream.

If you’re in town on the first Saturday of the month during the summer, you’ll find an outdoor market in Olde Town with artisan booths, live entertainment, good food and fun for all!

“Discover Olde Town Okotoks…shop, dine and indulge!”

Need to boost your energy with a little caffeine infusion, perhaps some lunch? If you’re on McRae Street, there’s no doubt you’ll enjoy the creative signature dishes of the Heartland Café. Their menu is a fresh interpretation of traditional recipes derived from whole foods and quality ingredients.

However, if you find yourself on Railway Street, a visit to the Homeground Coffee & Roasting House will reward you with incredibly delicious, certified organic specialty coffees from around the world. Their kitchen is “operated with an intentional heart and mind of love, consciousness and gratitude during the preparation of food.’

Or, perhaps you’d prefer to seek out the fine french cuisine at Bistro Provence! Located in the historic building that housed the Sheep Creek Post Office in 1882, the Bistro offers both a unique setting and a refined menu selection.

Another exceptional McRae Street discovery that’s guaranteed to delight people that appreciate good food and love to cook is On Tap Oil & Vinegar. Here you’ll find more than 50 varieties of premium extra virgin olive oils, infused olive oils and certified dark and white balsamic vinegars. Salads will never be boring again! Sampling is encouraged.

Searching for a great diversion for an evening’s entertainment that the entire family can enjoy? Explore the many great options at Monkey Mountain Toys & Games on McRae Street. Monkey Mountain carries an assortment of family board games, card games, craft and science kits, baby developmental toys, and eco-friendly toys. Monkey Mountain is not just for kids – they have a good selection of adult games as well.

Too young to enjoy games yet? For infants and expecting moms, The Bump to Baby Boutique on Elizabeth Street offers everything you need from “Bump to Baby.” Trendy maternity clothing, diaper bags, nursing accessories, cloth diapers, toys, and even natural teething remedies for baby! Bump to Baby also sells gift baskets for showers and birthday gifts.

If your Saturday excursion calls for home decor or gift solutions, there are many great shops and services to be found on your browse through the Olde Towne district.

On Elizabeth Street you’ll find delightful items for country living and western lifestyle at the Boot Hill Gallery & Gift Shop. Western art, bronze and home decor, furniture, custom picture framing, and more.

On McRae, check out both Finishing Touches Furniture & Accessories, and Cozy Cottage Interiors, a one of a kind shop featuring new and vintage home accessories, handcrafted jewellery, candles and gift items.

On Railway Street, On A Lark Antiquities & Uniquities holds the possibility of love at first sight. And you’ll also delight in the antiques and gifts to be found at The Cranberry Cottage.

Fond of traditional art and craft? Rumpled Quilt Skins on Railway Street is another of the many shops you’d regret to miss in Okotoks. It features European crafted sewing machines, classes, fabrics, notions, servicing and advice. When you visit them in this 100 year old rejuvenated sandstone, take a step back in time as you view some of the most beautiful quilts in the country.

And when you’ve had enough of inspiration and are craving a chance to express your own creativity, be certain to check out the Paint It Up Pottery Studio on Stockton Avenue. This contemporary studio offers a wide array of paint-it-yourself ceramics. The friendly staff will help you create a one-of-a-kind piece of art, a great experience that you can enjoy on your own or with friends and family. Prices start at $15, which includes paint, glaze, and kiln firing. They also offer classes for all ages working with clay, special events, and theme nights throughout the month.

This list of shopping highlights is by no means complete – we didn’t want to eliminate the opportunity for surprise and new discovery altogether! There are many, many galleries, antique stores, shops and services in Okotoks, within and outside of the Olde Towne district, too numerous to mention in detail but all worth visiting.

Something to suit every person and every need. There’s no doubt about it – the shopping scene is just one of the wonderful benefits that make Okotoks a great place to visit, and an even better place to live!
