OKOTOKS – A LESSON IN COMMUNITY
The Town of Okotoks is a family-oriented community with a strong focus on learning and development for students of all ages. Despite the small size of the community compared to it’s neighbour Calgary, residents have access to a generous number of pre-schools, elementary schools, high schools, private schools and alternative education options. Public elementary and secondary schools in Okotoks fall under the jurisdiction of the Foothills School Division. Catholic elementary and secondary schools are managed by the Christ the Redeemer Catholic School Division. The École Beausoleil Francophone d’Okotoks provides French Immersion education for grades 1 thru 9, as well as pre-school care. Okotoks also provides education options for post-secondary with a local campus for Bow Valley College. Bow Valley College is focused on bringing programming from multiple colleges and universities to help students reach their education and career goals. Adult continuing education programs are available through Foothills Continuing Education Council and Okotoks Community Resources & Leisure Learning. The community of Cimarron is located in close proximity to three elementary schools – one public, one Catholic and one private. The Big Rock School provides education for Kindergarten to Grade 6 students under the jurisdiction of the Foothills School Division in the public system. St. Mary’s School provides Language Arts, Mathematics, and Religion instruction, emphasized with all students receiving quality learning experiences in Social Studies, Physical Education, Health, Art, French, Drama, Computers, and Music/Band. The Okotoks Montessori School is a private pre-school with an Alberta Education curriculum-basedECS/Kindergarten program, renowned for language, mathematics, art and humanities, while stressing life skills; like problem solving, courteous behaviour and self expression. Their structure allows them to provide smaller class sizes, as well as individual attention for the gifted and special needs children. When they are ready to move from the elementary school to a high school, families have the choice of two terrific high schools in the vicinity of Cimarron. Both are in the public school system and located adjacent to one another.. The Foothills Composite High School offers excellent opportunities for academic education in a conventional but well-delivered format. The second option, located in the same area as Foothills, is the Alberta High School of Fine Arts, which has an excellent academic record, as well as a unique focus on creative development. In addition to grade schools, Cimarron is situated conveniently close to several pre-schools. Among these you will find Kumon of Okotoks Tutors, which provides a Guided Home-Study Tutoring Program for pre-schoolers. Other local options in the vicinity of Cimarron include the Serendipity Pre-Kindergarten, the Sunshine Nursery School and Angels Embrace, as well Edison School which is an accredited private school. “Edison’s unique atmosphere guides and encourages each student to …” The Fraser Institute has created an excellent resource – the ‘School Report Cards’ website – that offers detailed profiles on academic performance, compiled using objective, publicly-available data to rate and rank schools, such as average scores on tests provided by provincial education ministries. You can find information for many of the elementary and high schools in Okotoks on this site. By combining a variety of relevant, objective indicators of school performance into one easily accessible public website, the School Report Cards website allow teachers, parents, administrators and municipal residents to analyze and compare the academic performance of individual schools in an attempt to answer the question, “How are our schools doing?”.
